Wes is a prolific composer, writing for his bass, guitar, and voice, and for many other collaborators. Wes’ unique style has been described as, “visually expansive, a hyperbolic sound-scape, sonically erotic, sensually inviting, and mysteriously tender.” Wes’ inspiration comes from observing, and participating with the elemental forces of nature, and the stunning diversity and cultural beauty in the world. This “music” provides a template for understanding our collective creativity, out-of-the-box thinking, and the connective elements of synergistic phenomena.
Wes has recorded or toured with legends such as Chuck Mangione and King Sunny Ade and George Russell, innovators like, Hal Crook, and Yazhi Guo, drum masters Rakalam Bob Moses and Kenwood Dennard, and guitar giants Stanley Jordan, Vernon Reid, and David Fiuczynski.
Wes’s work is not limited to the musical realm: with two masters degrees from Harvard University in landscape architecture and planning. Wes owns and operates a thriving landscape architectural design firm in Boston MA (ThomasWirthAssociatesInc.com). He also is developing a permaculture research farm dedicated to promoting sustainable practices with hundreds of edible fruits, nuts, fungi, and perennial vegetables, aside more conventional foods. The living arts farm has expanded to include the growing and manufacturing of extremely high quality medicinal hemp, used to make a line of extraordinary CBD products. Please visit WholeHempFarm.net.
To my mentors and collaborators
To drummer and exceptional composer Bob Moses for the drum wisdom and stunning compositional awareness, stunning arranging, innovative band leading, and out-of-the-box thinking.
To guitar master Stanley Jordan, for having me as a member of his trio, and for sharing his integrated arts approach to guitar virtuosity, extraordinary musicianship, incredibly inventive study of harmony, music theory, physics, astronomy, coding, and so much more… and demonstrating/living the dynamic connections between music and other realms.
The Kenwood Dennard captain of the groove ship meta jam – for the possibilities, of poly-rhythm, complexity, simplicity, purity, contemplation, heart, and flow… the funkiest grooves on earth, with the deepest sensitivity. Groove ship take off! And the introduction to so many masters.
Pan masters Michael Gabriel and PJ Adams for pan wisdom and Trinidadian soca and calypso groove, and melodic power.
Gospel jazz pianist extraordinaire, George W Russell Jr., for sharing the funkiest gospel and jazz grooves on the planet, and his incredible original compositions, and for over 30 years of performing incredible
music together.
Sali Oyugi, Master for Kenyan singer songwriter, for helping me understand tremendous depth and beauty in African culture, music, and for teaching me how to solo: play it once pause… play it again, pause… play the third time, and it’s all yours…
Master African drummer Ibrahima Camara, for my first introduction to the beauty of Senegalese (African) rhythms and music; building intricate interlocking patterns, the core linkage between drum and dance, and the integration of music and life.
Kora master, Bala Tounkara and dance and drum master Joh Camara, both from Mali, have shared so much music with me. The rich traditions of Malian Music, beautiful harmonies, rhythms, reinterpretations of traditional songs, dance, and body movements or the music, and the message of the griot… the stories of the culture and history, in song. With them I learned how music can be woven into the primary fabric of our lives.
Chris Pitts, saxophone master, for cresting music and creative visioning together and for believing in the vision and producing remarkable concerts and recording, and allowing the space for the music to evolve organically.
To gifted pianist and band leader Frank Wilkins and Sergio Bellotti, for showing the way music can build community and move hearts. Every Tuesday at Slades – it’s a thing!
Living Legend R&B guitarist, Wali Ali, for sharing his amazing sounds and experience. He worked with the legends of soul music – and is one for me.
And my teachers from way back, Chris Brooks. Miroslaw Vitous, Dave Holland, Ray Brown, Thomas McKinley, George Russell.
